Generic Name: Metoprolol Tartrate 50mg tablet
Class: Beta Adrenoceptor Blocker

“ Still the first drug of choice for Angina and Hypertension”

What are BETA BLOCKERS?

  • Drugs that slow down the heart rate
  • Main Effects: Decrease workload of the heart and blood pressure
  • Main Indications: Angina Pectoris, Hypertension and Myocardial Infarction

What is METROPOLOL?

METOPROLOL is a BETA 1 selective (cardioselective) adrenoceptor blocking agent. By blocking the action of the symphathetic nervous system, it will reduce the heart rate and the force of cardiac contraction and lowers the blood pressure. Its main indications are ANGINA PECTORIS, HYPERTENSION and MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION.

METOPROLOL MODE OF ACTION

 1.    1st indication: ANGINA PECTORIS

Angina is a type of chest pain, pressure or discomfort. It occurs when myocardial (heart) oxygen demand exceeds supply. The heart is not receiving enough oxygen due to narrowed coronary artery. METOPROLOL reduces the myocardial oxygen demand by reducing the heart rate and the force of muscular contraction, thus relieving angina.

2.    2nd indication: HYPERTENSION

Metoprolol is used in reducing cardiac output and suppressing rennin activity, and therefore helps reduce blood pressure.

3.    3rd indication: MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION

Metoprolol helps reduce cardiovascular mortality by reducing the risks of angina pectoris and hypertension.
