OVERVIEW OF GLAUCOMA:

It is an eye disease characterized by high intraocular pressure (IOP), a defect in the eye’s drainage system which then further cause damage to the optic nerves and leads to loss of vision. There are two kinds of glaucoma-OPEN ANGLE GLAUCOMA and CLOSED ANGLE GLAUCOMA. Open angle glaucoma accounts for most cases, it is a situation where the drainage angle formed by the cornea and iris remains open, but the aqueous humor (a clear, gelatinous fluid that helps maintain the intraocular pressure) drains too slowly. It occurs gradually without any symptoms. It is commonly referred as the “silent thief of sight.” On the other hand, the closed angle glaucoma is the less common form of glaucoma wherein the drainage is closed or blocked and is often acute. The loss of vision can occur within hours. It is common among far-sighted people and is related to pupil dilation.

MODE OF ACTION OF CETAMID:

It inhibits the carbonic anhydrase which then leads to a decreased secretion of aqueous humor, lowering the intraocular pressure.
