INDICATION:

Used to reduce low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, apolipoprotein B and triglycerides, and to increase high-density cholesterol in the treatment of hyperlipidemias. Also used as adjunct treatment in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, and is given prophylactically to hypercholesterolaemic patients with ischemic heart disease.

WHAT ARE STATINS?

Statins are cholesterol lowering agents derived synthetically from the mold aspergillus terreus. It is a drug that act by slowering down the production of cholesterol by the liver and increasing the ability of the liver to remove excess cholesterol in the bloodstream. It is also known as a specific inhibitor of HMG CoA reductase, an enzyme required for production of cholesterol in the body.

  • Peak plasma concentration: 1-2 hours
  • 95% bound to plasma proteins
  • Extensive first-pass extraction
  • HMG Co reductase inhibitory activity similar in young and elderly subjects
  • Excretion: Feces (60%); Urine (13%)
